Established in 1960 by the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, the Ministry of Education of China, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), and the State Oceanic Administration, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST), also known as Nan Xin Da, stands as the oldest meteorology science institution of higher learning in China, formerly known as the Meteorology College of Nanjing University until 2004. Situated on the north bank of the Yangtze River within Nanjing's Industrial Zone, the university spans 140 hectares and hosts over 30,000 undergraduates, including approximately 1,500 international students, guided by a faculty comprising more than 1,500 full-time staff across 22 schools and colleges. Renowned as one of China’s national "Double First-rate" universities, NUIST offers a diverse array of degree programs encompassing management, economics, law, agriculture, humanities, and atmospheric science, recognized as China's premier discipline in a Ministry of Education evaluation. Notable strengths also extend to geoscience, engineering, and computer science. Guided by the motto "promotion of virtue, investigation of nature, cultivation of self, and construction of society," NUIST distinguishes itself as one of two institutions offering the Chinese-Government Scholarship-WMO program, emphasizing meteorology and related fields. Housing a World Meteorological Organization Regional Training Centre, NUIST has trained over 2,400 senior meteorological and hydrological technicians and managers from 140 regions. The university maintains collaborative partnerships with 48 institutions across 15 countries, including prestigious universities like Yale University, the University of Manchester, and the University of Toronto.
