Founded in 1889, the University of New Mexico now occupies 600 acres along old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque, a city of more than 500,000 people. From the magnificent mesas to the west, past the banks of the historic Rio Grande to the Sandia Mountains to the east, Albuquerque is a blend of culture and cuisine, styles and stories, people, pursuits and panoramas. The University of New Mexico offers a unique campus environment with a Pueblo Revival architectural theme that echoes the buildings of the nearby Pueblo Indian villages. The nationally recognized Campus Arboretum offers an outstanding botanical experience in the midst of one of New Mexico's great public open spaces. Representing a wide cross-section of cultures and backgrounds, UNM, a Hispanic-Serving Institution, is known as The PeopleUNM. In the fall of 2018, main campus saw 24,393 students, with an additional 6,491 attending branch campuses and education centers. The average student age at UNM is 27 years old. With over 27,000 employees statewide, including those at University Hospital, UNM has a substantial workforce. Its alumni network exceeds 114,000, with Lobos in every state and 89 foreign countries, nearly half of whom choose to remain in New Mexico. Under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, UNM is designated Doctoral/Research Universities-Highest Research Activity, offering a wide range of programs from undergraduate certificates to doctoral degrees, including first-professional programs in law, medicine, and pharmacy, as well as education specialist certificates. UNM's libraries, museums, galleries, and Center for the Arts enrich the cultural landscape of the state, while its Tamarind Institute stands as one of the premier printmaking workshops globally. Home to the Lobos and part of the Mountain West conference, UNM athletics, drawing fans from across the nation, have gained renown, with the University Arena, or "The Pit," ranking 13th by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 20 sports venues of the century.

Within each pillar, various standards are carefully assessed, with weights ranging between 1 and 2, emphasizing the varying importance of each criterion. This nuanced approach ensures a holistic evaluation and offers an insightful measure of universities commitment to Green Education Transformation (Education 6.0).
