About University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth has a rich history dating back to 1869 with the establishment of the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and the Arts. Originally focused on training engineers and dock workers due to the city's maritime industry, the institution expanded its scope following the Second World War. Renamed Portsmouth Polytechnic in the 1960s, it grew to become one of the largest polytechnics in the UK. Attaining university status in 1992 marked a significant milestone, allowing the institution to validate its own degrees. Over the years, Portsmouth has continued to evolve and innovate. In 2009, the School of Law introduced a mock courtroom for realistic case simulations. Recent developments include the opening of new academic buildings, such as the £14 million wing of the Eldon Building in 2014, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for creative arts students. Subsequent additions like the White Swan Building in 2015, providing performance space, and the Forensic Innovation Centre, a collaboration with local police, underscore Portsmouth's commitment to academic excellence and practical learning opportunities.
