About Aberystwyth University
Established in 1872 in the coastal town of Aberystwyth, Aberystwyth University emerged as a cornerstone of Welsh education. Originally supported by community donations, it grew into what is affectionately dubbed "the people’s university," now accommodating nearly 10,000 students across its diverse faculties. The Penglais Campus, situated just a short stroll from the town center and seafront, serves as the university's central teaching hub, while Llanbadarn houses its equine teaching center, and Gogerddan hosts the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences. Nestled amidst breathtaking natural landscapes, Aberystwyth offers students easy access to Cardigan Bay and the Cambrian Mountains. Renowned for its environmental commitment, the Penglais campus was the first in Wales to earn a Green Flag Award. Meanwhile, Aberystwyth itself garnered recognition as the "Greatest Town" in 2015, celebrated for its vibrant culture, eclectic shops, and lively nightlife. Amid a significant campus redevelopment initiative, the university invested £45 million to enhance student accommodations, teaching facilities, and arts centers, with further plans for campus improvements on the horizon. Despite its growth, Aberystwyth University prides itself on maintaining an intimate and welcoming environment, fostering both active social lives and academic excellence among its student body.
