About Chang Gung University

Established in April 1987 as the Chang Gung Medical College, Chang Gung University had a mission of training outstanding medical personnel at that time. Departments and graduate schools of engineering and management were later added to meet the needs of the country's economic development, enabling instructional resources to be broadened and talented workers in medicine, engineering, and management to be produced. Students have been accepted into our engineering and management programs since 1993, when the Ministry of Education permitted our name change to “Chang Gung College of Medicine and Technology.” Following the addition of more departments in subsequent years, our upgrading and name change to “Chang Gung University” were formally approved by the Ministry of Education in July 1997. The University currently consists of the College of Medicine, College of Engineering, and College of Management, under which undergraduate programs are offered, including Departments of Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nursing, and various engineering disciplines, among others. Graduate institutes include Nursing Sciences (Master), Biomedical Sciences (Master/Ph.D.), and Clinical Medical Sciences (Master/Ph.D.), among others. With approximately 581 full-time and 666 adjunct faculty members, and more than 7,200 students enrolled, the University is actively engaged in both instruction and research areas. Continuous efforts have been made to strive for excellence in both instruction and research areas since the establishment of the institution. Outstanding scholars and experts have been continuously hired to join the faculty community, with faculty members actively participating in national-level research projects. An extracurricular practicum system has been instituted to educate and shape students to be “diligent, perseverant, frugal, and trustworthy” and well-versed in both theory and practice. Collaboration with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, the Formosa Plastics Group, and other institutions has been established to conduct work-study programs. The developmental goal of the university is to transition from a teaching-oriented to a research-oriented institution. Efforts will continue to improve the quality of the teaching staff, equipment, and instruction, as well as to provide students with more opportunities to engage in humanities studies. Taking advantage of Formosa Plastics Group's abundant manufacturing and medical service resources, Chang Gung University aims to be a first-rate internationally renowned university that prepares high standard professional talents in the fields of medical science, high technology, and knowledge management.
