About Georgetown University

Georgetown University, located in Washington DC, stands as the oldest Catholic and Jesuit higher education institution in the US. Its prestigious alumni roster includes two former US presidents, Bill Clinton and Lyndon Johnson, along with other heads of state such as King Felipe VI of Spain. Founded in 1789 by John Carroll, the nation's first bishop and archbishop, Georgetown awarded its inaugural bachelor's degrees in 1817. Despite challenges like the American Civil War, which nearly led to its closure, Georgetown emerged stronger, particularly under the leadership of Patrick Healy, the university's first African American president. Healy's tenure, from 1873 to 1882, saw significant curriculum reforms and the construction of iconic campus buildings like Healy Hall. Today, Georgetown comprises nine undergraduate and graduate schools, including Georgetown College and the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, renowned for educating global leaders. With a diverse student body of over 17,000, including 11% international students from approximately 130 countries, Georgetown's Jesuit heritage remains integral, emphasizing service to others and social justice. The university extends its reach globally, with a presence in Doha, Qatar, and study abroad opportunities across the Mediterranean. Notable alumni, known as Hoyas, include figures like former US defence secretaries Robert Gates and Donald Rumsfeld, former president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, and actor Bradley.
