About National Autonomous University of Mexico

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (NAUM), established in 1910 by Justo Sierra, the then minister of education, is the largest university in Latin America. Originally named the ‘Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico’, NAUM gained autonomy from government influence in 1929, granting it greater freedoms in curriculum and budgetary management. Today, NAUM offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and operates several high schools in Mexico City to prepare students for higher education. Its main campus, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was designed by renowned Mexican architects. With campuses across Mexico and international locations in Texas, Illinois, and Quebec, NAUM accommodates diverse student populations. While Spanish is the primary language of instruction, the university provides an intensive Spanish language program for international students. NAUM boasts associations with three Nobel Laureates and counts five Mexican presidents among its alumni, alongside prominent journalists, philosophers, and politicians. Renowned for research excellence, NAUM houses various research centers, including the Centre for Applied Sciences and Technological Development, focusing on integrating science with real-world issues, particularly those relevant to Mexico and the developing world.
