About Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Founded in 1956, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the first universities specialized in Chinese medicine since the establishment of People’s Republic of China. The university is jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education and Shanghai municipal government, and is also involved in the project of the high-level university cultivation run by the municipal government. It currently provides 14 undergraduate programs, including Chinese medicine, integrative Chinese and western medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion, nursing, food hygiene and nutrition, public services management, rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, Chinese materia medica, pharmacy, biomedical engineering, preventive medicine. Among all the programs, the program Chinese medicine is jointly conducted with Shanghai Jiaotong University and East China Normal University. The undergraduate programs cover clinical medicine, nursing, management and medical assistance. There are 4786 full-time undergraduate students. In 2018, the two programs of Chinese medicine and Chinese materia medica were successfully enlisted in the national key program construction plan. In the 4th round of program assessment issued by the Ministry of Education, the disciplines Chinese medicine, Chinese materia medica, and integrative Chinese and western medicine were ranked A+ nationwide, and stand out among the peer universities. The university provides doctoral programs in the disciplines of Chinese medicine, Chinese materia medica and integrative Chinese and western medicine, and provides master programs in the disciplines of Chinese medicine, Chinese materia medica, integrative Chinese and western medicine, history of science and technology, medical technology, nursing, translation, and public health. The programs provided at the doctoral level cover all the programs in the field of Chinese medicine. The university inherits and develops the theoretical system and methods of diagnosis and treatment of Chinese medicine, integrating modern life science, introducing the methodologies of biology, electronic engineering, informatics, linguistics, philosophy, etc., clarifying the unique understanding of life from the perspective of Chinese medicine. The university has conducted a series of interdisciplinary and cutting-edge research of integrative Chinese and western medicine, the research on the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases with integrative Chinese and western medicine, the research of the basic theory of Chinese materia medica and applied scientific research, and the research on internationalization and standardization of Chinese medicine. The university also develops objective diagnosis and treatment technology, and studies the development history of natural sciences in ancient and modern both domestically and internationally.
