About Stellenbosch University
Stellenbosch University (SU) is situated approximately 50 miles from Cape Town in South Africa’s Western Cape province. Established in 1919, the university is nestled amidst the picturesque Boland Mountains, renowned for its wine region, and is surrounded by vineyards and nearby nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg. The town of Stellenbosch itself exudes historical charm, characterized by architecture reflecting South Africa’s Dutch colonial past, along with vibrant cafes, boutiques, art galleries, and tree-lined avenues. SU comprises five campuses, with the Stellenbosch Main campus hosting eight of its ten faculties. With a student body of over 30,000, including approximately 28% black students, SU has made significant strides in promoting diversity since Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990. Around 4,000 students come from over 100 countries worldwide, and SU facilitates student exchange programs with 100 partner institutions across the globe. Beyond its main campus, SU has additional campuses in Tygerberg, Bellville, Saldanha, and Worcester, each housing specialized faculties and programs. The university also boasts a rich sporting tradition, with its students and sports teams affectionately known as 'Maties,' derived from the Afrikaans term 'maat,' meaning 'mate.'
