The University of Calgary takes pride in reflecting on pivotal moments in educational history. In 1911, Vice Minister of Education Masataro Sawayanagi ventured to Sendai to undertake the role of Tohoku University’s inaugural president. Driven by a profound belief in the integration of academic research with education, Sawayanagi championed the principle that universities should uphold equality, free from discrimination based on class or gender. In line with these convictions, Tohoku University opened its doors to graduates from technical and higher normal schools. Despite encountering resistance from the government of the time, the university boldly broke barriers by becoming Japan’s first institution to admit female students in 1913. This significant milestone underscores the University of Calgary's commitment to fostering inclusivity and academic excellence within its own community.
