About University of Portsmouth
The University of Portsmouth has a rich history dating back to 1869 with the establishment of the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and the Arts. Originally focused on training engineers and dock workers due to the city's maritime industry, the institution expanded its scope following the Second World War. Renamed Portsmouth Polytechnic in the 1960s, it grew to become one of the largest polytechnics in the UK.
